ISO 14001 – EMS, Environmental Management System

ISO 14001 is an international standard designed to help all types of organizations reduce their significant environmental impacts. It does this by providing basic, agreed-upon requirements to help an organization develop good environmental management practices. ISO 14001 is a structured way to organize, evaluate and implement programs within a company to reduce waste, manage by-products, even eliminate or minimize environmental disasters. A process-based and compliant environmental management system becomes a practical tool to help organizations understand and manage their impacts on the environment. It provides a framework to continually improve environmental performance and through its processes, it engages employees, customers and other stakeholders in the important task of reducing environmental impacts.

ISO 14001 is based on the concept of Plan, Do, Check, Act – PDCA

Plan Develop an environmental policy containing the commitment of management to regulatory compliance, continual improvement, and prevention of pollution.

Identify the environmental aspects associated with the organization’s operations, and set environmental objectives.

Develop plans to implement and manage each environmental program. Plans should include responsibilities, training, communications, documentation, document control, operational control and emergency preparedness/response.

Integrate the Environmental Management System with existing management systems such as quality management systems and occupational health and safety management systems.
Do Implement and maintain environmental programs.
Check Measure and monitor ongoing environmental programs to identify opportunities for improvement.
Act Management reviews and monitors the environmental management system, develops priorities and resources to make continual improvements.
