Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) 18001 - Health and Safety Standard

An OH&S management system promotes a safe and healthy working environment. It reduces the risks associated with health and safety in the working environment for employees, customers and the general public. It does this by providing a framework for your organization to consistently identify and control its health and safety risks. Implementing this management system reduces the potential for accidents, aids legislative compliance, and improves overall performance.

OHSAS 18001:2007 helps organizations do the following:
  • Establish an occupational health and safety management system to eliminate or minimize risk to employees and other interested parties who may be exposed to occupational health and safety risks associated with its activities
  • Assure conformance with its stated OH&S policy
  • Demonstrate such conformance to others
  • Implement, maintain and continually improve an OH&S management system
  • Make a self-determination and declaration of conformance with this OHSAS specification
  • Seek certification/registration of its OH&S management system by an external organization
Essentially, OHSAS helps in a variety of respects, it helps minimize risk to employees; improve an existing OH&S management system; demonstrate diligence; gain assurance; etc. These benefits can be substantial. This standard integrates well with ISO 9001: 2008 and ISO 14001: 2004. It is based on the same concepts of Plan-Do-Check-Act. This framework is driven by commitment from top management to ensure the resources are provided and have management support.
